To go above 255 means you will need to completely overhaul how the game calculates levels. 255 is the maximum amount of unique 1 and 0 combinations for an 8-digit binary system. You can't go to 256 or above simply because the game codes your level as an 8-digit binary code.
Why 255? That's the amount of levels the game can possibly allow.
