Throughout our history our band has played for many notable dignitaries. We are a proud member of ACAPO and actively contribute our services to all clubs and events within the ACAPO organization. The band has become sophisticated and innovative in serving the Portuguese community. The military officials welcomed the band, and offered a memorable reception in the bands honour at city hall. Furthermore, the band performed in a reputable theatre, marched through the streets towards the military fort in São Braz. The band stayed in Ponta Delgada, to participate in many religious and civil events such as the Feast of Sr. The band left North America for the first time and travelled to the St. The band would later return to the USA four more times to take part in the festival of the Holy Spirit in Fall River, Massachusetts. The band performed an open-air concert, beside the Federal Parliament Building in Ottawa under the directorship of Mr. Aideen Nicholson, Member of Parliament (under the leadership of then Prime Minister – Pierre Elliot Trudeau) to participate in the Canada Day Festivities. In July of 1983, the band was invited by Ms. Although many performances occur in the GTA, the band has participated in events taking place in foreign soil. We have also participated in numerous events within the Italian, Spanish, and English communities. Helen’s has never limited itself to performing strictly for the Portuguese community in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). Having participated in many religious events within the Portuguese community, The Music Society of St. Helen’s Parish by Father Liborio Tavares, where we have been for the last 35 years since leaving Santa Cruz Parish and thankfully collaborate with Father João Cabral. Today, the band is still fortunate to have active veterans, which include Mr. The band was comprised of 30 musicians, the first public appearance occurred while participating in the feast of the Holy Spirit at Santa Cruz in the spring of 1975. They formed the first directorship of the Banda do Sagrado Coração de Jesus. I've come to suspect that for most back issues you could build up that core strength and not be terribly limited in doing anything.The Music Society of St. Granted, I'm overweight, and I hadn't yet learned how much improving my core strength would help my back - but I'd already started with a little bit of boxing (more for fitness than for actual sparring) by the time I reached that epiphany, and not only was boxing much easier on my back, I thought it was better from the perspective of trying to keep healthy. I had started dabbling in some BJJ before I hurt my back about 4 years ago (after a car accident I buggered my facet joint which constantly inflames and causes pretty severe pain.)Īfter the accident I couldn't do it any more, my back would get too sore within about 10 minutes. I still hope to learn even the core basics of both of those disciplines in the near future to compliment my Kung Fu knowledge. And also the non-religious version of Aikido. I've always wanted to also learn Jeet Kune Do (Bruce Lee's systemless system of counter-attacking).

I just found it too hard physically to push further.doing insanely fast things in 90 degree heat for extended periods of time, as well as acquiring that ability of strengthening your inner tissues so that you could THEN move into learning how to take hits from baseball bats, get driven over by a truck, etc etc.
But I couldn't break into that higher echelon that other private students were breaking into or prepared to break into. I did it for about 5 or so years, private one on one lessons. A black market version of Kung Fu where some "hidden" secrets were openly taught.much to the chagrin of higher ups who felt that kind of information should be learned much later in life like THEY had to wait and learn it.
